SOME FACTS U GOTTA KNOW.

Interpretation and Translation are very different skills.

Interpreters are often called upon to make split-second decisions about the meaning of certain cultural phrases, or idioms, where a direct translation might render the phrase insignificant.

For example, the German expression," mit jemandem unter vier Augen sprechen literally translates as," to talk with someone under four eyes," but the intepretation of the common German phrase is "to speak privately with someone".

Interpreters therefore, need to understand not only the language being spoken, but the meaning the speaker wishes to convey.

You can imagine that in a politically-charged atmosphere like the United Nations, the word choices an interpreter makes can often mean the difference between war and peace.
